Canterbury kids will be running wild with colour today as a collaborative art installation opens at Christchurch Art Gallery.

Tangle is a free event in which kids get to take control by tangling and weaving coloured elastic through tall poles.

Like a giant pegboard, the tangle becomes an abstract work of art and doubles as a bouncy playground.

It is the first of its kind for New Zealand, brought to the art gallery by Polygot Theatre.

Bookings are essential if you want to join in on the chaos, which can be done online.

Christchurch Art Gallery reopened its doors in December after being damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
