A sexual assault charge against former All Blacks player Mils Muliaina has been dropped.
The Crown Prosecutor sent a letter to Muliaina's lawyers saying the charge had been discontinued because there was not enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.
Muliaina had denied the charge of sexually assaulting a young woman in Cardiff in March after drinking at the 'Kiwis' bar. The allegation related to the alleged touching of the woman's bottom over trousers on the dance floor in a busy night club.
Thirty-five-year-old Muliaina had arrived at Cardiff Crown Court tonight for a plea hearing.
Muliaina's lawyer John Charles Rees QC said the charge was outrageous, given his client's reputation as a high-profile athlete.
"My client has said from the beginning, 'No I didn't touch her' – and if it did happen, it was a case of mistaken identity," he said.
Muliaina is applying for costs to cover his expenses of travelling to the court.
