Charges laid against Baby City over unsafe cots

The Commerce Commission has laid nine charges against a national baby products chain accused of selling cots that didn't meet safety standards.

Two models of Baby City's household cots - sold between October 2014 and October 2015 - have been identified as having structural defects.

Testing found the Milano 3-in-1 Sleigh style cot and Milano Phoenix cot had a potential 'snag' point which could catch on clothing, as well as issues with packaging, labeling and mattress base marking.

The retailer told the commission it hadn't received any reports of injury or harm related to the cots' use in January this year. It also issued a product safety notice to customers on how to repair the defects.

Baby City will appear in the Auckland District Court next month for offences against the Fair Trading Act.
