Christchurch is expected to learn today who will be leading the next stage of its earthquake recovery.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority is being replaced by Regenerate Christchurch, a joint council and Government agency.

It's understood the new agency's chief executive has not yet been appointed.

Gerry Brownlee says directors and board members of Regenerate Christchurch are about to be announced.

He is positive about local leadership taking over the recovery effort.

"I think the structures are right, certainly Regenerate is a structure that the council wanted, and within a short period of time it became a full council-controlled organisation."

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the next phase of the city's recovery will mark a steep change.

"I'm very comfortable with the arrangements that we have in place and I want to make sure that they work."
