A neighbour has reported hearing a loud noise moments before a child was found dead on a south Auckland driveway.

The child was found dead at a property at Favona Road, Mangere Bridge around midday.

"A child has died suddenly. At this early stage very little information is able to be confirmed or provided," say police.

A neighbour who heard the loud bang told a Newshub reporter she wasn't sure what the sound was, and it could have been a vehicle crash or a firearm. After this she heard wailing and crying.

There are now multiple detectives at the scene gathering evidence. Family members are arriving, extremely upset. Police cordons stretch up both sides of the road, and cover several properties.
