A child has received minor injuries this morning when an air conditioning duct fell out of the ceiling at a cinema in the Auckland shopping suburb of Newmarket.

It brought down around 16 square metres of roofing tiles with it, reports the New Zealand Herald, onto a seating area in the foyer.

One person, a young girl, was being treated by ambulance staff after suffering minor cuts.

Four trucks, a rescue unit and a helicopter were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for Event told 3 News the cinema would remain open, and it's not believed the collapse is related to recent renovations.

The company's CEO is on the way to the cinema.
