Child taken to hospital after hit-and-run

A child has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries after a hit-and-run in Christchurch.

Witnesses called emergency services after a nine-year-old girl was struck by a west-bound blue Subaru as she attempted to cross Yaldhurst Rd before 8:20am this morning.

The children were both in shock and police understand the girl was treated in Christchurch Hospital.

The driver of a blue Subaru allegedly involved is being urged to contact Canterbury police.

"The driver is understood to [have] pulled over and stopped but drove off after a witness approached him. Witnesses last saw the vehicle driving along Yaldhurst Rd towards Russley Rd," says Constable Kurt Gillibrand.

The driver is described as being a 25- to 30-year-old man with darkish skin, possibly Indian or Polynesian.

The vehicle registration was not taken down but the CCTV image shows the car.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Christchurch Police Station on (03) 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
