Christchurch bridge fix goes unnoticed by drivers

A nine month bridge repair in central Christchurch has been completed - all while still being used by more than 300,000 commuters a month.

After the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, the overbridge on Durham Street was badly damaged and needed repair on the reinforced beam head that sits under the deck of the bridge.

The repair involved eight new steel beams being attached to the bridge with fresh concrete providing reinforcement to the steel, while also using 28 hydraulic jacks to lift the bridge so work could progress.

Fixing the bridge was one of the last major projects funded by the $2.2 billion Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCRIT) repair programme.
