Christchurch business damaged after large fire

A large fire has caused extensive smoke damage to a Christchurch business.

Firefighters were called to Salcom Communications in Magdala Pl in Middleton just before 8pm.

Four crews were needed to bring the blaze under control.

"It was pretty thick, black smoke - so we forced entry through the door and worked our way through the building to the scene of the fire," says Sockburn senior station officer Mike Johns.

A fire alarm at the property went off but emergency services were first alerted when a member of the public phoned 111.

Mr Johns say it appears the fire started in a rear section of the building, where computers are serviced.

Fire investigators have arrived at the scene but it's not yet known what caused the blaze.

"It had potential to move into the other occupancies in the building, but the firewall stopped it," Mr Johns says.
