Christchurch Cathedral recovery goes online

A group opposing the demolition of Christchurch's Anglican Cathedral has launched a public relations campaign to try convince church leaders and the public that it should be saved.

The Great Christchurch Building Trust says it has photographic proof that the historic cathedral can be restored.

Images that show the crumbling side of ChristChurch Cathedral are images Jim Anderton and his team don't want the public to see any more.

They say the crumbling ruins of the cathedral's facade give the perception it can't be saved.

"It's three years on and despite the fact it was described as dangerous and imminently going to fall over, it's still standing there," says Mr Anderton.

That's why, despite an unsuccessful battle in the courts, the Great Christchurch Building Trust has now launched another offensive to try save the Cathedral from demolition.

But this time they are calling for the public's help, with a social media campaign featuring aerial photographs taken of the building two months ago.

Mr Anderton says the photos show 80 percent of the building is still in good condition and he hopes the public will agree.

"Our objective in all this is to persuade Bishop Victoria and the church's property trustees to reconsider their opposition to reconstruction," says Mr Anderton.

No one from the Church Property Trust, which owns the cathedral, was available for comment, but a spokesman said that the latest campaign doesn't change anything.

Public opinion on the church's fate remains divided.

Mr Anderton and his team will need more than a few Facebook likes and hashtags if they're to persuade the public and the church that the cathedral's worth saving.
