Booze and taxi queues spark central Christchurch violence

Alcohol and frustrations over inadequate transport options have put a congested area in central Christchurch top of a leader board for violent assaults.

A Newshub investigation into assaults, sex attacks and robberies in public places showed an area including Cathedral Square and the St Asaph Street bar area has the highest rate of these attacks in any part of Canterbury.

And it has the highest rate in the country for any urban area with fewer than 3000 people living there.

In 2015, there were 305 victims in the Cathedral Square area. That’s more than 100 more than the area in second place, Manukau Central with 192, followed by Kuirau in Rotorua with 168.

The crimes include anything from rape to being beaten up or being robbed of your cell phone at knife-point.

The city's bars, restaurants and cafes have now returned to above pre-quake levels and that's with 70 percent of the city rebuilt, repaired or with work under way and major hospitality developments such as Antony Gough's $300 million The Terrace still to be completed.
