Kyle Park, Hornby: An area has been fenced off after testing positive to asbestos

Kyle Park in Hornby has tested positive for asbestos and has been cordoned off by Christchurch City Council.

The site is comprised of trees and plantings, and recent testing showed evidence of asbestos fibres in the soil.

The site was once a landfill before closing in 1981. Asbestos potentially could have been airborne over the years Parks Unit manager Andrew Rutledge says.

Sporting activity does not take place in the affected areas, which is on the perimeter of the park.

"Temporary fencing has been erected around the sites to minimise any soil disturbance. We are asking that all people adhere to this fencing and refrain from entering these areas," Mr Rutledge says.

Further testing would be carried out in other areas of the park but Mr Rutledge says there is currently no evidence to justify full closure of the park.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey says, "It is good to see the Christchurch City Council taking prompt action to remediate the site, despite the risk to park users being close to zero. Community and Public Health will be taking a close interest in the monitoring results."
