The Anglican church has decided to go with a radical vision for its new ChristChurch Cathedral.

It's an unconventional design made out of cardboard tubes.

The structure will cost $5.3 million and will be big enough for a congregation of over 700 worshipers.

Transitional Cathedral Group spokesperson Richard Gray says there is more to the decision on the cathedral’s location than that it will be based on Anglican land.

“We wanted to be near the CBD, we prefer to be on the Eastern side, and it is rather poignant that the building is proximate to the CTV building,” he says.

He says the building will be strength-tested to ensure it is safe in case of a future earthquake.

The building has affectionately been dubbed the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’, but Mr Gray says there is more to the building than hollow tubes.

“The cardboard tubes are strengthened, of course, by steel and timber beams,” he says.
