Auckland City Mission has kicked off its campaign to help feed thousands of families struggling to get through the Christmas period.

Last Christmas more than 4000 emergency food parcels were delivered throughout December, and that number is expected to jump this year.

Auckland City Mission chief executive Chris Farrelly told Paul Henry it's their busiest Christmas period yet, and queues are already lining the street.

"The numbers of homeless have increased, probably doubled in the last two years - so that's number one.

"The food parcels we've given out in the last year have gone up 25 percent on the previous year. All this points to the fact that we have a serious issue."

The community's generosity is keeping things afloat, he says. People can donate to Auckland City Mission's Christmas appeal here.
