A popular community centre west of Nelson could be out of action for some time after being extensively damaged by fire.
More than 10 fire appliances from around the Nelson region were needed to extinguish the fire in the Moutere Hills Community Centre, about 35km west of Nelson.
"It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you get inside it's quite badly damaged," fire safety officer Ross Bailey told NZ Newswire.
"The function room at the complex is extensively damaged and there's smoke damage throughout."
Mr Bailey said the community centre has been extensively used by the community since it was built in 2005.
The fire has already forced a shift for the Nelson International Aromatics Symposium, an annual event for which showcases Nelson wines and introduces people to international aromatic varieties of wine due to start on February 1, to Seifried Estates.
"This fire has been a hiccup for us, but a tragedy for the Moutere community," symposium chairman Patrick Stowe said.
"We are all hopeful the centre can be rebuilt quickly and we will certainly be back there for our events in future."
Mr Bailey said he could not estimate how long it would take before the community centre would be repaired.
He said the fire was not suspicious.
