Passengers were forced to get off a train on Auckland's Western Line this morning due to overcrowding.

The train stopped for 18 minutes at the Avondale station at about 8:15am, before a speaker announcement requesting some passengers get off and wait for the next one.

A spokesperson for Auckland Transport initially said he would be "surprised" if passengers were forced off because of overcrowding, but later confirmed to Newshub some passengers had to get off because the doors wouldn't shut.

The next train was seven minutes behind schedule.

From next week, services on the Western Line will be more frequent.
