Convicted child sex offender arrives in NZ

A convicted child sex offender has arrived back in New Zealand this afternoon and police say they have no power to detain him or monitor his movements.

Peter Walbran was arrested in Thailand earlier this month on suspicion of possessing child pornography.

The 59-year-old was convicted of child sex offences in Indonesia three years ago.

He's been deported to New Zealand as the Thai investigation continues.

Project Karma, which helped Thai authorities track him down, is calling on the Government to revoke his passport.

"This man has no remorse for what he has done in the past and has had no rehabilitation," says Project Karma founder Glen Hulley. "He's very likely to do the same thing again, unless some steps are taken to restrict his movements."

Walbran arrived at Auckland airport just after midday.
