Council begins debate on long-term plan

Auckland Council will debate its long-term plan today, including how to fund $10 billion in transport improvements over the next 10 years.

Plans to ease the crisis include imposing an interim transport tax on property rates to help fund new infrastructure.

The $99 charge has the backing of Generation Zero and the Green Party, but the AA says its members are becoming increasingly concerned about the cost of fixing the city's congestion problems.

"What started off as a 3.5 percent rates increase is suddenly looking more like 10 percent," spokesman Barney Irvine said on TV3's Paul Henry programme this morning.

"Council's saying this is what Auckland wants, but what we're hearing from our members is that they're actually really concerned."

Feedback indicates most Aucklanders would prefer a motorway toll, but that requires a government law change.

The Government has in the past also ruled out fuel taxes.

"This is an interim solution, but we want to see whatever plan, whatever funding package is proposed is going towards a much stronger plan," says Mr Irvine.
