Council takes action to stop bridge jumpers

The local council says it will take action to stop copycats of a death-defying bridge jump at a popular water hole in McLaren Falls near Tauranga.

A video shows a man jumping more than 23 metres off the top of a bridge into a pool below.

It comes less than a week after a teenager died after jumping from a bridge in Raglan.

The YouTube video was made by a Tauranga local who witnessed the daredevil jumping last week, and it's created a storm on social media.

"It shows quite a lot of risky behaviour," says Western Bay of Plenty District Council deputy CEO Gary Allis.

Despite the danger signs, the warnings aren't getting through. Our camera captured plenty of people jumping today.

But thrill-seekers be warned – authorities are cracking down.

"We're now looking at whether we put some physical barriers on the struts to stop people climbing up," says Mr Allis.

He says the council has reviously tried to stop people jumping.

"We tried in the past to put barriers up, but that failed because people just cut the barriers."

Other swimmers say they're comfortable jumping from the bridge, but no higher.

The dangers of bridge jumping have already been in the spotlight recently. In November two men died at McLaren Falls after one fell from after a rope swing that broke, and another man tried to save him.

And just a week ago teenager died at a popular spot in Raglan after he was struck by another person jumping from Te Kopua Bridge.

In the meantime, the Council hopes no one else tries to copy this dangerous stunt.
