From the end of September, Aucklanders taking buses, trains or ferries will be able to pick up their groceries from some stations on their way home.

Auckland Transport and Countdown supermarkets plan to have groceries pick-up points at five transport hubs across the city.

Commuters will be able to make shopping orders from the Countdown website, before 1pm, and they will be available that evening at the chosen trial location.

The trial locations are:

The pick-up times for Albany, New Lynn, Orakei and Downtown are 4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday. For the Matiatia Ferry Terminal at Waiheke, pick-up times are 4:30pm to 7:30pm, Monday to Friday.

Transport Blog writer Matt Lowrie says it's a good idea.

"It removes one more barrier for people using public transport."

He says it's a good step towards development around transport hubs and he hopes there'll be more available at stations where people are walking.

"Overseas there's retail outlets built into stations themselves. Already in Wellington there's a New World Metro in the station."

He says the question is if the service will prove more helpful than simply getting groceries delivered to your home.

There's a $5 fee to use the service, but the first order is free, Countdown's Keith Cowden-Brown says.

The new service is a six month trial, and AT says it aims to add more locations if it's successful.

Currently, it says, the five chosen locations see more than 95,000 AT HOP card users and customers every day.

"Through this Click & Collect trial we aim to provide our customers with even greater levels of convenience and flexibility, whatever their mode of transport," Auckland Transport chief metro officer Mark Lambert says.
