Gold will be mined from under homes in Waihi after the Environment Court gave the project final approval.

The court granted consents to Newmont Waihi Gold's Correnso Mine on Friday after the company agreed on conditions with appellants.

The company plans to develop the mine, which has been estimated to employ about 400 people, about 350 metres underneath residential homes in east Waihi.

The mine area is smaller than what the company originally applied for.

Newmont general manager Glen Grindlay said the company pleased with the outcome.

"This is a new mine with new conditions. While they are workable for us, they certainly place some very tight restrictions on our operations."

The mine would provide jobs for the Coromandel town for several years, he said.

The company's Martha and Trio mines in the area would reach the end of their lives in the next 18 months and the Correnso mine would fill the gap, providing employment and economic certainty for Waihi, Mr Grindlay said.

The mining consent lasts for 12 years. The mine was currently estimated to produce around 600,000 ounces of gold within that period, Mr Grindlay said.

More exploratory work would be carried out into the extent of the ore body, he said.

Work was not likely to start underground at the mine before late December as management plans needed to be put in place, he said.
