A stronger police presence and stricter rules have resulted in better behaviour from crowds at Christchurch's Cup Day.

It's one of Christchurch's biggest days out, with around 22,000 crowding into Addington Raceway on Tuesday.

Traditionally the boozers can overshadow the fashion and the action on the track, but this year attendees have been well behaved.

"Overall, police are really happy with the behaviour displayed at Cup Day today, and that people seem to have taken heed of the message to think about alternative transport options, or organise a sober driver," said Senior Sergeant Kelly Larsen.

The police's big anti-drinking weapon was a wristband - if punters had been drinking too much, their wristbands would be removed.

While as the day wore on, some were worse for wear, but no one had to be arrested.
