Cycleway to cause more traffic for Auckland

Auckland city is facing more major traffic problems from today as work begins on a new cycleway tunnel.

Construction is set to begin for the New Zealand Transport Agency's (NZTA) Grafton Gully cycleway, which will provide pedestrians and cyclists with a 1.9km path from Upper Queen Street to the bottom of Grafton Gully.

Traffic on Wellesley Street East heading towards Auckland Hospital will be restricted to one lane from today.

That will be followed by four lanes reduced to two on Wellesley Street East between Friday and Tuesday. The State Highway 1 off-ramp will also be reduced to one lane.

"The restricted access will mean some congestion, which will delay people," says NZTA's highway manager Tommy Parker.

"We will do everything to minimise those delays but people should allow more time to get where they are going, and be patient."

The two lanes heading west into the city will be reduced to one between April 2 and 4, while four lanes will be cut to two on Wellesley Street East between April 12 and 17.

The cycleway is due to open in September.
