Cyclist and train collide in Christchurch

A male cyclist has died after colliding with a train in Christchurch this morning.

The incident happened at the Fendalton Rd rail crossing where the train is stopped on the tracks. It was travelling south from Papanui towards Blenheim Rd.

Police say the barrier and the signals appeared to be working at the time and are investigating the cause. 

A spokesperson says police will be speaking to those who were there to get an idea of what happened. The man's family were being notified.

Detours are in place around Fendalton Rd (Newshub)

Christchurch Boys' High School has released a statement saying some of their students witnessed the incident this morning while getting to school. They were being looked after by the school's guidance team or had been collected and taken home by parents.

The public is advised to avoid the area as the road is closed between Harper Ave and the Straven and Idris Rd intersection. Traffic is reported to be moving smoothly despite the detours in place around Fendalton Rd.
