Dame Anne Salmond NZer of the year

Thursday 28 Feb 2013 10:16 p.m.

Renowned historian, writer, teacher and environmentalist Dame Anne Salmond has been named New Zealander of the year.

Dame Anne is the author of a number of award-winning books and articles about early Maori life, and first meetings between Pakeha and Tangata Whenua.

Her passion for New Zealand history began as a young child. She was fascinated by the work of her great grandfather James Macdonald - a film maker and artist who worked closely with Maori leaders at the turn of the 20th century.

Today, her huge body of work is credited with helping New Zealanders understand who we are and where we came from.

Dame Anne is also an environmentalist and has spent more than a decade restoring Longbush Reserve near Gisborne, where she grew up.

Her passion for education led to her involvement in the Starpath project, which helps underachieving students reach their potential.

Dame Anne is currently a distinguished professor of Maori studies and anthropology at the University of Auckland.
