Defence Force admits problem with sexism

The New Zealand Defence Force admits it has a problem with sexism.

Research into sexual harassment and abuse has sparked a new initiative aimed at recruiting and retaining more women in the military.

National Sexual Abuse Survivor advocate Louise Nicholas says it's well overdue.

"What they've got in there at the moment is very similar to what the culture was in the police. So something like this needed to happen, and it needed to happen a long time ago."

Louise Nicholas says people in the military are afraid that speaking out about sexual abuse will hurt their careers.
