Woman in hospital after Christchurch dog attack

A reportedly pregnant woman was taken to hospital after a dog attack in Christchurch last night.

The victim, believed to be 23-years-old and 30 weeks pregnant, was set upon by a pair of Staffordshire cross dogs at a residence in Avondale.

St John were alerted at 7:35pm and sent an ambulance to an address on Glenrowan Avenue.

The young woman was taken to hospital with dog bites to her arms and legs. She remains in hospitable this morning and is in stable condition.

A Christchurch City Council officer attended the incident last night and the dog remains in the councils care. There are no records of either dogs and they aren't micro-chipped or registered. 

The council is investigating the matter, but have not received statements from the victim or dog owner as of yet.

A police spokesperson told Newshub there is no police involvement with the dog attack at this stage.

Renewed calls to ban dangerous dog breeds have been made in recent days after a seven-year-old boy was hospitalised with serious injuries from a mauling in Takanini over the weekend.

Last week, a two-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being attacked by a dog in Woolston while a 72-year-old woman was bitten by a dog, also in Christchurch.

Each year ACC deals with around 10,000 dog bite claims.
