The nine-month-old girl who was bitten by the family's Jack Russell has been released from Dunedin hospital.

Dunedin City Council (DCC) have called it an "unfortunate accident" after the infant was attacked by the Jack Russell yesterday afternoon around 2:30pm. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The dog, one of two on the property, bit her on the face, wounding her below the eye and in the gums. However, police say it wasn't a "vicious attack".

Both dogs were registered and have no history of complaints, DCC senior animal control officer Peter Hanlin says.

The attack happened in the suburb of Tainui on Cavell St.

Mr Hanlin says the council won't be taking action against the owners and the dog was still in their care. He says they're satisfied the dog poses no risk however, the family are putting the dog down.
