Fire crews are working hard to save a dog who was caught in a house fire in south Auckland on Wednesday night.

The fire was reported at around 7pm at a block of six houses on Nikau Rd in Otahuhu.

The properties were well ablaze by the time firefighters arrived.

A fire service spokesman says no one was home at the time of the fire, but a dog is fighting for its life after suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire has now been contained and crews are investigating the cause.
