Conservationists are urging greater awareness from dog owners about the dangers their pets pose to the kiwi population.
They're running training courses around the country as part of Save Kiwi Month, to stop dogs in their tracks.
It's a simple course where fake kiwi are laced with the smell of a real bird and placed in bush. Dogs are then fitted with an electric collar, and given a short sharp jolt if they approach the fake bird.
It may appear to be a shocking technique, but conservationists say it's a small price to pay – especially considering dogs are the biggest killer of adult kiwi.
