Dramatic scenes in Kaitaia child sex case

There were dramatic scenes in the Kaitaia District Court yesterday as two men who had been pillars of the community appeared in court, accused of child abuse.

Businessman and caregiver Daniel Taylor collapsed as a judge read out 19 child sex charges against him, while teacher James Parker cried as he faced 23 new charges.

He'd been due to be sentenced on 49 earlier charges.

Police appear to have alerted the school to Parker's behaviour but he was allowed to go on offending.

They're the latest in a series of paedophile abuse cases, so what more can be done to protect our children?

Alan Bell from ECPAT Child Alert, a trust that works to stop the sexual exploitation of children, spoke to Firstline this morning.
