A 22-year-old man from Otara has been charged over a crash in Kumeu as a result of a police pursuit on Thursday that left a five-month-old girl in serious condition has been denied bail.

The male driver, who can now be named as Travis Clarke of Otara, appeared at the Manukau District Court today.

He, a female front passenger and five-month-old girl were taken to Auckland Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and were released the next day.

According to police, Clarke was arrested after he accelerated away from police and lost control of the car, causing it to roll on State Highway 16.

Police say the car was driving in the opposite direction passing the patrol car at a speed of 124 km/h. Officers performed a U-turn and signalled for the car to stop. Clarke pulled over for a short period of time before suddenly accelerating away at speeds of up to 150 km/h.

Police say they were not aware of the baby girl in the back of the car, and immediately applied first aid on the child when they found her lying next to the car.

The man has been charged with reckless driving causing injury, failing to stop for a red light and siren, and driving while forbidden.
