Drivers warned to be careful as holidays finish

Drivers are being warned to take care on the roads, with heavy traffic expected as people head home after school holidays on Sunday.

The worst affected areas are expected to be State Highway 1 between Waikato and Auckland, and State Highway 2 from Paeroa to Tauranga.

The NZ Transport Agency's Liam Ryan says people need to prepare for delays and be careful.

"Be patient, plan ahead, and to drive safely so we all get home safe," Mr Ryan says.

Mr Ryan adds people should plan to start their driving early and avoid driving on Sunday afternoon.

Hawke's Bay Police are reminding drivers that with children across the country returning to school tomorrow, they need to slow down and pay attention around schools.

Senior Sergeant David Sutherland says police will be looking out for anyone who may be parking or stopping illegally around schools, and they'll take enforcement action where necessary.

Children can be unpredictable and drivers need to take this into account when travelling in school zone, he says.

While drivers need to be take care around schools, it is also important for pedestrians to stick to the footpath and use pedestrian crossings.
