The southern Department of Conservation (DOC) has banned drones from certain national parks because they disturb the peace.

The noisy machines can no longer be flown at the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn walking tracks tracks in Fiordland, Fairfax Media reports.

Trampers are known to attach drones to their backpacks and take them along the Fiordland National Park tracks in a bid to capture the beautiful scenery from birds' eye view.

However, southern South Island DOC staff told Fairfax they are disturbing the peace, especially around bush huts, and pose a safety risk if they crash.

So far the drones have not been banned on any other tracks, but a national drone policy may come about in the future.

Drones are classified as aircraft, and permits are required for aircraft to land on DOC land. But permits for drones will not be issued on the Southland tracks.
