Crosses made by students at a school in Hamilton have been vandalised overnight.

The crosses, which had the names of soldiers killed during battle written on them, were made by pupils at Berkley Intermediate School to commemorate Anzac Day.

Police say CCTV footage revealed a drunk teenager was responsible for the desecration. The 17-year-old has since been found by police and will appear in Hamilton District Court this afternoon.

"While the children will be contemplating a sense of loss from this senseless act they will also be learning and experiencing a real sense of comradeship right now and that people are held account for their actions," says Sergeant Jonathan Clark.
