A menacing gaggle of geese in Dunedin will be up to no good no longer, as preparations are underway to cull them this week.

The eight geese have been causing trouble at Watson Park sports ground in Port Chalmers.

Volunteers have had to spend hours picking up the poop left by the geese, with some sports games having to be relocated.

There was the option to clip the birds' wings, but it wasn't a long term solution, according to Dunedin City Council.

A Taieri farm offered to take the birds as well, hoping to lure them with bread and catch them in nets. However, despite the council extending the deadline twice, the geese couldn't be caught. The council also wasn't convinced the birds wouldn't just fly back to the same area.

The council will shoot the birds within the week, but says it won't be during school hours or when sport is scheduled.
