Dunedin surfer swims with whales

A Dunedin surfer and paddle-boarder have had a once in a lifetime experience paddling with a pair of southern right whales off Dunedin's Saint Clair Beach.

Newshub cameras were rolling as the pair and the duo from the deep frolicked just 100 metres offshore.

Paddle-boarder Craig Latta says the mammals, which can weigh up to 60 tonnes, were very graceful and inquisitive toward their human visitors.

Mr Latta says he regularly surfs at Saint Clair and this is the first time he's seen whales.
