Early morning quake rattles Taranaki

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has rattled Taranaki just before 6am on Tuesday.

The "strong" quake struck 10km northwest of Opunake at a depth of 19km.

The quake has been felt widely across the North Island particularly along the west coast stretching from New Plymouth down to Wellington.

Many people are describing the quake as a "sharp jolt".

No damage has been reported.
