Earthquake near Kermadec Islands triggers 'ghost quakes' in NZ

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake near the Kermadec Islands has caused several "ghost quakes" in New Zealand, GeoNet says.

The earthquake hit at 2:35pm today and was centred 965km northeast of Whangarei.

Ghost quakes are seismic readings in locations far away from the epicentre of the actual earthquake.

A quake in the Kermadecs with a strong enough magnitude will show up on seismographs across much of New Zealand.
