Power has been restored to the majority of the 2400 homes and businesses cut off by an electrical fire.
A fire broke out around 6:45am at a power transformer on Abbots Way near the Remuera golf course and took a number of hours to extinguish.
Vector says 179 homes and businesses remain without power while Abbots Way has been reopened.
Resident James Smith says the explosion woke him up.
"Woke up this morning to a large bang, a power cut and a fire across the road outside our kitchen window. I found out later that a transformer blew [SIC]."
The outage had closed local businesses with the BP unable to serve customers and the local golf course shut for the morning.
