The Ellerslie Flower Show kicks off in Christchurch today.

While this year's entries have got gardening enthusiasts excited, the new city council is wondering whether it will be enough to reverse the trend of budget blowouts and dwindling crowds.

Organisers say there's more major exhibition gardens than at any other year in the shows 21-year history, and they're hoping it's a selling point as this year's show will be reviewed to consider the events long-term future.

Firstline reporter Emily Cooper spoke to organiser David Mee and costume designer Jenny Gillies, about whether the show has what it takes to survive.
