Health warnings have been issued and an investigation is underway after effluent was discharged into a tributary feeding a Southland stream.
Environment Southland says the significant discharge in the Benmore area will have entered the Winton Stream, even though work was done to minimise the impact.
It doesn't affect the Winton residents' water supply, but people should stay out of the stream and keep dogs away from it.
Environment Southland doesn't expect to give an all-clear until early next week.
