A man believed to have shot dead his ex-partner and her boyfriend in Auckland last year had a hoard of firearms at his home, according to reports.

Glenys Stanton, 47, and Trevor Waite, 51, were shot several times on August 23, 2013, in the bedroom of Ms Stanton's Opaheke home. Their bodies were discovered by her 18-year-old daughter.

Police believe the killer was Ms Stanton's ex-boyfriend, John Mowatt.

The 51-year-old was found with self-inflicted gunshot wounds in Woodhill Forest, just hours after police named him as a person of interest.

Had he not died, Mowatt would have been charged with two counts of murder, reports the New Zealand Herald.

The investigation into the tragedy recently wrapped up, and police say the case against Mowatt was "strong".

The Herald is also reporting a number of firearms were found at Mowatt's property near Muriwai, both inside the house and in a storage unit.

Ms Stanton and Mr Waite's deaths have been referred to the coroner.
