A former University of Otago student who fronted Islamic State propaganda earlier this year is now wanted in Australia.

Australian Federal Police have issued an arrest warrant for Tareq Kamleh, also known as Abu Yousef al-Australie, on charges of membership of a terrorist organisation, recruiting for a terrorist organisation and being in a "declared area", the Guardian reports.

The trained doctor appeared on a propaganda video earlier this year to promote the Islamic State, and encouraged other Musilms to travel to Syria as the terrorist group attempts to piece together some sort of hospital or medical facility.

Kamleh studied health sciences at the University of Otago in 2003 and lived in Cumberland Hall.

His former friends told the Otago Daily Times he was a "really popular" student, and used to go by the name 'Tex'. He was reportedly well-known on the drinking scene but missed the cut for the university's medical programme.

He later moved to Australia, and had been working at a children's hospital before his departure. He will be arrested immediately if he returns to the country.
