Expedition South rolls into Christchurch

A month-long road trip on the same TE-20 Ferguson tractors Sir Edmund Hillary first rode to the South Pole is nearing the end.

Expedition South rolled into Christchurch this afternoon and Sir Ed's son, Peter Hillary, greeted the drivers when they arrived.

Christchurch is the last major city on the 2000 kilometre trek before it comes to an end at Aoraki Mount Cook on Monday.

"I've done a lot of climbing over the Mount Cook area over the years but for me it's every time I'm up there, it's sort of, 'This is Dad's territory'," Mr Hillary says.

"It'll be touching, it'll be great to be up there."

The Antarctica Heritage Trust needs to raise $1 million to help repair the Hillary's historic hut, the original hut at the New Zealand's Scott Base.
