A fresh wave of funding from the Community Conservation Partnerships Fund (CCPF) will be invested into three projects across New Zealand to help sustain kiwis in the wild.

The CCPF will put $226,000 towards conservation initiatives in the West Coast, Northland and Coromandel, alongside another $2.13 million that has been granted to 31 other pest-control initiatives announced last week.

This follows an $11.2 million towards kiwi recovery that was announced in this year's Budget.

Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says kiwis in the wild are declining by 2 percent every year, and there are around 70,000 birds left in isolated populations.

"They could be extinct in the wild within our grandchildren's lifetimes," she says.

"We know that by supporting community groups and boosting DOC's own work with kiwi, we can reach our goal of turning that decline into a 2 percent increase," she says.
