Palmerston North residents have been getting knocks on their door from people claiming to be from the Earthquake Commission (EQC), despite the city not suffering any earthquake damage.

Reports of such visits led to police urging people to be alert to the scam.

They say the scammers claim to be from the Palmerston North City Council or EQC in order to make their story more believable.

Police have confirmed EQC isn't going door-to-door for inspections and say any claims made otherwise are wrong.

Manawatu Prevention Manager Inspector Dave White says residents should tell police immediately if they come into contact with any scammers.

"Don't let these people into your house or property and be sure to report the interaction to police immediately," he said.

"We ask that people spread this information with their friends and family, especially the more vulnerable like the elderly and people without internet, to stop people becoming a victim of this scam."

Investigations are continuing into the reported scams.
