Family welcome NZDF staff home after Fiji stint

Category 5 Cyclone Winston killed 42 people in Fiji and left hundreds homeless.

Today, the New Zealand Defence Force staff finally arrived back on New Zealand soil after two months of humanitarian efforts.

Around 300 NZDF personnel were greeted lovingly by their families when the HMNZS Canterbury docked at the Devonport Naval base in Auckland this afternoon.

The group helped to repair schools, medical and community buildings, and restored access to safe drinking water and essential aid supplies.

The contingent was made up of 150 combat engineers, tradespeople, plant operators and medical personnel from the New Zealand Army, and 55 members from the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Two ships and seven aircraft were also sent to Fiji. It was one of the largest NZDF peacetime deployments to the Pacific.
