Some of New Zealand’s best known actors appeared on stage today for a play written by a group of intermediate school students

“Mary's Christmas Yarn” was performed in Auckland this evening to help less fortunate children on the other side of the world.

Acclaimed actor George Henare and TV actress Annie Whittle acted alongside 12-year-old Caitlyn Woodley.

Caitlyn and a group of friends from Blenheim’s Bohally Intermediate won a script writing competition to have their play, which was adapted from the book "Mary’s Christmas Yarn", performed by New Zealand’s leading actors.

The play, in aid of ChildFund follows Mary and her pet lamb as they learn about the difference one animal can make to a third world country.

While working with big names was child’s play for Caitlyn.

“It's amazing,” she says. “You almost know that if you muck up, they'll guide you and get you back on track, they're so amazing it’s just awesome.”

It was new territory for some of the more experienced actors.

“It's great,” Henare says. “It’s the sort of stuff you don’t get to do when you do serious theatre - to play around as much as we have on this. It's great fun.”

Great fun for a great cause.
