Retail giant Farmers is under fire after posting an image on its Facebook page of two "gaunt and unhealthy" models.

Promoting a range of clothes by Andrea Moore, as of Saturday morning Farmers' post had been liked 85 times - but 78 users reacted with a 'crying' face, 77 'shocked' and 47 'angry'.

Hundreds have left messages on the post, which went up Friday, expressing their disappointment.

"I scroll through Facebook without paying attention but stopped on this image as I thought it was an article about models and eating disorders," wrote Brogan Cassidy.

"Scroll up a bit and see no it's actually an ad for Farmers. Shocked to say the least."

"They so look gaunt and unwell. I'm really disappointed," wrote Anna Webster.

"You cannot look at these girls with their bones sticking out and believe that they are a good role model for a family store," said Jo Austwick. "I have enough trouble with body image arguments with my daughters without these images being depicted. They do not look healthy."

Another user said they looked as if they'd just stepped off the set of zombie apocalypse show The Walking Dead.

One of the two models appears in a number of promo shots on the Farmers website, wearing different clothes.

Newshub contacted Farmers for comment, but was told to ring back on Monday.
